Calcination Plant

A calcination plant is an industrial facility used to heat materials at high temperatures in the absence or limited supply of oxygen to bring about thermal decomposition, phase transition, or chemical changes. This process is commonly used in cement, lime, metallurgy, and chemical industries.

Rotary Kiln is a pyro-processing device used to raise materials to a high temperature (calcinations) in a continuous process. The kiln is a cylindrical vessel, inclined slightly to the horizontal, which is rotated slowly about its axis. Rotary kilns have become the backbone of many new industrial processes that make the world a more efficient and sustainable place. As new applications for rotary kilns continue to be developed, much experimental work is being done, prompting many questions and the need for further research and development. A rotary kiln is comprised of a rotating cylinder (called the drum), sized specifically to meet the temperature and retention time requirements of the material to be processed.

Applications of Calcination Plants

  • Lime Production – Calcination of limestone (CaCO₃) to quicklime (CaO).
  • Cement Industry – Clinker production through calcination of limestone and clay.
  • Bauxite & Alumina Refining – Producing alumina (Al₂O₃) from bauxite for aluminum manufacturing.
  • Gypsum Processing – Converting raw gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) to plaster of Paris (CaSO₄·½H₂O).
  • Magnesite & Dolomite Processing – Producing refractory materials for steel and glass industries.
  • Chemical Industry – Production of catalysts, pigments, and activated materials.
